Health Care and Medical Practices from a Medical Volunteer's Point of View in some of Eastern Europe Ex-Communist Countries to World Health Medical Missions Organization.

By: Capra D.L.R. Razvan

In the context of an inefficient medical system and a low standard of living, I consider that there is a need of a new medical micro system to help support and ensure the good development of the already existent medical system, the state one as well as the private one.

Daily we are confronted with:

  • Unending queues at family practice offices among which one can find people in need of a simple medical advice or a trivial injection.
  • People who, due to the fact that they are dealing with the impossibility of leaving their homes or are simply uninformed, resort to the help of undertrained people to perform medical procedures at home, being always embarrassed by the fact that they have to appeal to their neighbor or acquaintance. Or there is the case of those who go to pharmacies in order to request a medical procedure because they are afraid of ending up in one of those medical offices in which the medical personal is displaying a rude behavior towards them.
  • People who would rather remain untreated or refuse the administration of drugs due to the fact that they do not have the financial possibilities of paying a private institution (which impose high prices only for shifting to one's house) or do not know any other people who might help them.
  • Young people who discuss their medical issues on the internet, most of the answers to their questions coming from other young people who frequent those exact same web pages, therefore enriching the already existent quantity of medical myths and incorrect information and finally leading to self medication.
  • People who do not consult a doctor out of fear that they shall not know who to address themselves or how to do it properly, therefore resulting in insults on behalf of the medical personal.

That is why this project intends:

  • Stopping the improper performing of medical maneuvers/procedures by under-trained or unqualified personal.
  • Reducing the costs of medical benefits for the population
  • Creating a more solid database that the pre-existent one concerning the family practice, creating statistics and medical tracking of the population.
  • Preventing and announcing, early on, the sick who are not taken into view
  • The coordination of patients in order to reach the specialized services in a hospital, through this reducing the pressure already existent on a medical system incapable of covering necessities and facilitating it, as a result.
  • The education of young people concerning medical issues and problems
  • Offering those who shall take part in the project the possibility of working with the public in order to acquire some experience and knowledge.

By promoting this project, we hope to obtain:

  • The implementation of a new attestation system in the medical domain which should allow medical students or young people who do not have a job following their medical residency the possibility of joining this programme.
  • Funds in the view of building and ensuring the required facilities for this medical service.

More precisely, we shall make the following maneuvers available to the population:

  • Monitoring of physiological parameters : temperature, breathing;
  • Monitoring of physiological parameters : pulse, blood pressure, oxygen concentration
  • Monitoring of physiological parameters : diuresis, stool
  • Administrating of intramuscular medication
  • Administrating of intravenous medication
  • Administration of intravesical medication through the bladder probe
  • Administration of medication through endovenous perfusion
  • Harvesting of biological samples (sputum, drool, urine)
  • Artificial feeding through the gastric probe and instructing the patient/ relatives.
  • Passive feeding, including the administration of oral medicine, for patients with deglutition disorders
  • Enema with therapeutic purpose
  • Vaginal lavage in cases of motor disabilities
  • Therapeutic maneuvers to avoid decubitus bedsores : mobilization, massage, medical applications, usage of rubber rings and rolls
  • Therapeutic maneuvers to avoid pulmonary complications : changing the position, massage treatment, respiratory physiotherapeutics.
  • Care taking of simple wounds/ removal of surgical wires
  • Care taking of over infected wounds
  • Care taking of multiple bedsores
  • Care taking of stomae
  • Care taking of fistulas
  • Care taking of the drainage tube
  • Care taking of the tracheal cannula and instruction of the patient
  • Monitoring of the peritoneal dialysis
  • Applying of pampers, bedpan
  • Aerosol treatment
  • Setting of a urinal probe
  • Vaccination
  • Setting of a venous cannula
  • Body hygiene (without bathing)
  • Glucose levels in capillary blood
  • Hemoglobin determination from capillary blood
  • Non-stop available phone service for the population.

We truly believe that the most important resource that we possess is our passion.

Of course it is not enough, but through this we managed to interconnect several student networks, therefore acquiring the human resources.

For starters, we plan to use a team of student of the General Medicine College, volunteers, to operate on the field, another group to take calls (ALOMED), to process patients data received from the operating team, another one in the field of web design, creation and journalism to promote the project, people from the Management and Accountancy College to follow and distribute evenly and fairly the available funds as to optimize the service.

Furthermore we shall need financial support and sponsorship in order to acquire the necessary equipment: vehicle, consumables, costumes, phone line etc. Therefore, in the beginning, we will use all that the team has available. We will contact more people in order to get sponsorship and we will try to raise funds (2%), donations, etc.

Health isn't a luxury!

More than this, if we add the problems that just came from our government, this kind of help and support from us would be very appreciated.
